Battlefield 6 Developers Discuss How Battlefield 2042’s Rocky Launch Shaped the New Game

Battlefield 2042, released in 2021, clearly fell short of expectations for EA and DICE. Despite being among the top-selling games in the US that year, its commercial performance and fan reception were disappointing. As Battlefield 6 approaches its October launch, producer Alexia Christofi confirmed in an interview that the lessons from Battlefield 2042`s difficulties were crucial in shaping the new title.

Christofi noted that the team gained significant insights from 2042. She explained that although 2042 deviated from the franchise`s core identity, this very deviation made it easy for players to articulate what the game lacked and, consequently, what Battlefield 6 needed to embody.

Fellow producer David Sirland added that considerable effort was dedicated to re-evaluating Battlefield`s foundational elements – destruction, distinct classes, and vehicles – and designing Battlefield 6 around these principles.

Both Christofi and Sirland emphasized the importance of clearly defining the essence of Battlefield, and equally, what it is not.

Sirland elaborated on this, stating that such a clear definition is crucial for long-term guidance, potentially for over a decade. He believes it should be so precise that every team member intuitively understands the direction, allowing them to assess new ideas against this core vision. He suggested that this clarity might have been lacking for Battlefield 2042, leading to reactive changes rather than adherence to a well-defined path.

Reflecting on 2042`s problematic launch in 2022, DICE General Manager Rebecka Coutaz admitted that “Everybody was disappointed.” This period saw significant leadership changes at DICE, including the departure of former GM Oskar Gabrielson, amidst a broader restructuring.

EA has since established Battlefield Studios, a new label dedicated to overseeing the franchise`s development, bringing DICE, Criterion, Ripple Effect, and Motive under its umbrella. The leadership team has also seen key additions, with former Call of Duty general manager Byron Beede now heading Battlefield, and the franchise`s future being guided by EA executive Vince Zampella, another veteran from the Call of Duty series.

While EA`s current approach to Battlefield 6 seems promising for regaining player trust, its ultimate success in a highly competitive market remains to be seen. In addition to its traditional multiplayer and campaign, Battlefield 6 will also feature a new battle royale mode.

An open beta for Battlefield 6 is scheduled to start on August 7 for a select group, with wider access later in the month. The full game is set for release on October 10 across PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S.
