EA has announced that the Battlefield 6 playtest was the largest beta in the franchise`s history by player count. The research firm Oppenheimer estimated participation exceeded 20 million individuals. Notably, a “substantial number” of these players reportedly accessed Battlefield 6 using the minimum recommended hardware specifications.
Christian Buhl, Battlefield 6`s technical director, confirmed this during an interview with Eurogamer. Buhl emphasized that both EA and DICE intentionally designed the game to provide a consistent and comparable experience for players on lower-end hardware, matching that of those with high-end machines, right from the outset.
“Minimum specifications are undeniably among our most crucial targets; they hold immense importance from both a commercial and business standpoint,” Buhl stated. “Our goal is to enable as many people as possible to play the game. We conducted extensive analysis and rigorous tests across a broad spectrum of hardware, both above and below our minimum and recommended specifications. This allowed us to determine what we could achieve and what was necessary from a business perspective to attract a wide PC audience. It has been absolutely critical.”
Addressing Anti-Cheat Measures
During the same interview, Buhl also addressed the controversial Secure Boot requirement, explaining that it is considered vital for combating cheaters.
“Honestly, I wish we didn`t have to implement features like Secure Boot,” Buhl admitted. “It regrettably prevents some players from accessing the game. Some PCs simply aren`t compatible, meaning those users can`t play, which is truly disappointing. Ideally, everyone should be able to play with minimal hassle and without such requirements. However, these measures are, unfortunately, some of the most effective tools we possess in our fight against cheating.”
EA has already released the PC specifications for Battlefield 6, along with details on upcoming changes derived from player feedback collected during the beta. Battlefield 6 is scheduled for release on October 10 for Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC.
