Battlefield 2042’s Portal Creator: Enhanced Tools for Map Design and Gameplay

Battlefield 2042, the latest installment in the popular shooter series, is set to significantly enhance its Portal map creation suite. While the Portal tools were initially introduced to the franchise, the upcoming version promises an extensively revamped toolset. Developers DICE and publisher EA recently released a video showcasing the new features and capabilities of this innovative Portal mode.

The refined Portal mode empowers players with unprecedented flexibility to construct, share, and enjoy personalized maps. Among the key additions is a spatial editor, leveraging the Godot engine, which allows creators to precisely manipulate map layouts and reposition existing elements. Furthermore, custom and AI scripting functionalities enable players to design unique user interfaces and command non-player character (NPC) combatants within their creations. All custom experiences developed using Portal will be accessible to the broader player community via a dedicated section.

Moreover, Portal introduces various modifiers, allowing players to fundamentally alter game rules. Options range from enabling one-shot kills to restricting weapon availability, among many others. A particularly noteworthy feature is that player progression and experience (XP) gain will be fully supported within Portal mode, ensuring that custom game sessions contribute to overall player advancement.

EA and DICE have confirmed plans for several post-launch maps to expand the game`s content. At its initial release, the game will feature nine distinct maps, including diverse settings like New York, Egypt, and Gibraltar. These environments boast extensive destructible elements, although not every structure can be leveled. Nevertheless, numerous buildings and objects are designed to be destroyed, dynamically reshaping the battlefield as engagements unfold.

Beyond the multiplayer experience, Battlefield 2042 will also include a dedicated single-player campaign. Fans will be pleased to see the return of classic Battlefield soldier classes—Assault, Medic, Support, and Recon—each complete with their iconic class-specific weapons and gadgets.

Pre-orders for Battlefield 2042 are currently open. An open beta phase is scheduled to commence on August 7th, running through various intervals throughout the month. EA plans to officially launch Battlefield 2042 on October 10th across Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC platforms.
