Atari has announced its acquisition of an 82% majority stake in Thunderful Group, the company renowned for the SteamWorld game series. The deal, valued at $5.18 million, significantly expands Atari`s publishing and development footprint in Europe.
Wade Rosen, Atari`s CEO and chairman, highlighted the strategic importance of this acquisition. He stated that Thunderful, known for its critically acclaimed titles, is poised for a return to profitable growth under a new transformation plan. Rosen expressed confidence in Thunderful`s teams to contribute positively to Atari`s European operations.
Background on Thunderful`s Financial Challenges
Thunderful Group, a Swedish company, has recently faced considerable financial difficulties. In 2024, it laid off approximately 20% of its workforce and initiated a restructuring process. Further compounding its challenges, the recent release of `Lost in Random: The Eternal Die` saw lower-than-expected sales. This performance prompted yet another round of restructuring aimed at improving the company`s cash flow.
Atari`s Recent Strategic Expansions
Conversely, Atari has been actively expanding its portfolio through a series of notable acquisitions over the past few years. These include remaster specialists Nightdive Studios and Digital Eclipse, the latter responsible for titles like `Atari 50` and `System Shock 2 Anniversary Remaster`. Additionally, Atari recently secured the intellectual property rights to `Transport Tycoon` and acquired its former competitor, Intellivision.
