Astro Bot: A Generational Game for Modern Kids

As Astro Bot marks its first anniversary on September 6, 2025, we take a moment to consider the profound impact this spirited robot has had on a new generation of players.

Over three decades ago, a profound fascination took hold of me. During a family visit, my gaze landed on a bulky, gray-and-black video game console connected to an old CRT TV. While I`d encountered arcade games and simple Mac titles, Super Mario Bros. was a revelation. Its intuitive controls, diverse levels, and memorable music captivated me. Our visit concluded with my siblings and me launching a full-scale campaign to persuade our parents to buy a Nintendo Entertainment System. That day sparked a lifelong passion.

This origin story is common for many who grew up in the 1980s. Decades later, as a parent, I now witness Astro Bot`s similar allure for my own children, mirroring my early encounters with Mario. I am certain that in the years to come, Astro will be the game they remember for first igniting their passion for gaming.

For me, that early exposure to Mario profoundly shaped my life`s path, influencing my hobbies, friendships, and even my career. It`s difficult to envision becoming a professional games writer without that initial spark. While I don`t expect my children to pursue careers as game critics, their engagement with Astro Bot underscores how pivotal these formative gaming experiences can be, often leading to unforeseen impacts.

Prior to Astro Bot`s launch, my visit to Team Asobi in Tokyo for a hands-on preview revealed a palpable excitement. It was clear this game was destined for greatness, a sentiment shared by the developers. Game director Nicolas Doucet emphasized their commitment to creating an accessible and engaging experience for younger audiences. Astro`s simple robot design was deliberate, making it easy for children to draw. The character`s wordless communication, conveyed through expressions and sounds, ensures even non-readers can follow the narrative. The platforming levels offer a balanced difficulty curve for new players, complemented by optional, tougher challenges for veterans.

Doucet reflected on his own early gaming memories, stating, “I remember the first few video games that I played, and because of how greatly they were designed, they stayed with me for my whole life.” He added, “When crafting a platformer, it’s crucial to appeal to both types of players. This philosophy has guided not only the game`s development but also the very culture of our team.”

Though Mario wasn`t explicitly named during my studio visit, its influence was undeniable. Team Asobi aimed to craft a game that would deliver an exceptional experience and possess lasting appeal.

Their efforts bore fruit. A year on, Astro Bot remains a staple in my home, frequently played by my children. My youngest, who is still learning to read, initially referred to it as “the robot game” but now knows the character by name. The game’s levels strike a perfect balance, offering enough challenge for a rewarding sense of achievement without becoming frustrating. He regularly impresses us with his skill, tackling even the most advanced stages with unexpected prowess.

My older children eagerly join in, assisting with tricky sections or diving into their own demanding challenge levels. They collaboratively face bosses, sharing laughter and encouragement during difficult encounters or beloved replays. When one child accidentally erased my 100% completed save file (no names mentioned, they know who they are), I found myself surprisingly unconcerned, knowing we could simply begin the adventure anew.

It`s important to acknowledge that Astro Bot probably won`t achieve the same universal ubiquity for my children`s generation as Mario did for mine. The 1980s saw fewer game releases and scarce mascot characters. Today, children discover games through various platforms—mobile, tablet, and console—amidst juggernauts like Minecraft and Fortnite. While nearly every 80s gamer remembers Super Mario, Astro`s influence will likely be more fragmented, given the multitude of gaming options. Its long-term staying power, comparable to Mario`s, remains to be seen. Nevertheless, for its profound significance within my family, Astro Bot will always hold a special place in my heart.

Astro Bot has garnered significant acclaim over the past year, enjoying strong sales, inspiring merchandise (including collector`s edition controllers), and even clinching the top award at The Game Awards 2024. Yet, for me, its most profound impact is personal: it has ignited my children`s curiosity and love for gaming, expanding their engagement with the medium. Watching them play transports me back in time, seeing my younger self—face illuminated by the nostalgic glow of an old CRT, mouth agape, mind alight with the boundless possibilities of this enchanting new form of entertainment.
