The journey to creating the popular game Arc Raiders by Embark Studios was far from straightforward. The team encountered significant challenges in defining its core concept, leading to extensive internal discussions.
At GDC 2026, Production Director Caio Braga revealed that for three years after development began in 2019, no one could definitively state what the game truly was. Opinions varied widely among the team members, ranging from a “battle royale” and a cooperative version of Shadow of the Colossus to a hero looter-shooter and a fast-paced boss-rush game with environmental obstacles.
Braga described “playtest battles” occurring at Embark Studios, where each test essentially showcased one of many fundamentally different versions of the game. With a team of approximately 120 people, distinct “factions” emerged, each fervently advocating for its particular vision of Arc Raiders.
Ultimately, the studio conducted external playtesting, which indicated that while the game was “sometimes” enjoyable, it lacked a consistent identity. Despite these mixed results, the developers managed to convince publisher Nexon to continue investing in the project while the team undertook a critical “reboot” to refine its direction.
This pivotal decision allowed them to eventually arrive at the version of Arc Raiders that players know and enjoy today. One of the most significant and impactful changes implemented during this period was a substantial reduction in the game’s overall tempo.
According to Braga, after the reboot, the speed of all in-game elements was decreased by approximately 60%. This crucial alteration helped the team truly appreciate and build upon the inherent strengths of components such as intricate map design, immersive soundscapes, and versatile sandbox mechanics – elements that now form the very essence of Arc Raiders’ identity as an extraction-shooter.
