Apex Legends Introduces Wild Card: A Permanent, Chaotic Party Mode in Season 26

Apex Legends is set to launch its 26th season, `Showdown,` on August 5th. This popular first-person shooter, now over six years old, introduces a new permanent game mode: Wild Card. This chaotic, party-oriented mode significantly departs from the traditional battle royale structure that players are familiar with.

During a pre-launch press event, we had the opportunity to discuss the mode with the development team. Apex Legends senior technical designers Chris Ruvolo and Kevin Wolski provided insights into Wild Card.

What is Wild Card?

Wild Card is a battle royale variant featuring unique `wild cards` (mode-specific perks), pre-equipped weapons, and elements designed to accelerate gameplay. For instance, the playable area is smaller, limiting exploration of Kings Canyon and accommodating only 30 players. New traversal options like ziprails and gravity cannons are added. Recognizing that a compact map with rapid movement could lead to quicker eliminations, Wild Card equips every player with a self-revive kit for a second opportunity.

Additionally, the mode includes kitted weapons that can be upgraded during play, along with approximately 11 red-tier mythic weapons. Unlike other modes, these powerful mythics are plentiful and found as floor loot, fostering a casual, party-game atmosphere distinct from the intensity of ranked matches.

Wolski described the mode as “our approach to a faster-paced battle royale experience that might be less daunting for new players who find the standard battle royale overwhelming with its emphasis on looting and equipment management. This mode truly prioritizes shooting, movement, and Legends.”

Ruvolo further explained, “Wild Card was also developed to address player feedback regarding the unranked experience being diluted with overpowered weapons or unconventional mechanics. We aim to maintain the purity of the unranked mode, keeping it similar to ranked play. Therefore, for those seeking a Limited-Time Mode (LTM)-style experience with powerful weapons and core gameplay alterations, Wild Card is the ideal destination.”

Beyond a Limited-Time Mode

The debut of a new permanent game mode is somewhat unexpected, given that Apex already features seasonal Limited-Time Modes (LTMs) and a rotating permanent playlist within its `Mixtape` selection. Wild Card could have easily been integrated into Mixtape, prompting the natural question of why the developers opted to establish it as a standalone, permanent mode.

Wolski stated that Wild Card`s permanence stems from several factors, primarily community feedback. “Our events team frequently heard from players during past LTMs, particularly `Three Strikes` or `Revivals,` that they wished these modes were permanent. They expressed a strong desire for a permanent battle royale mode with respawns. Wild Card is our response to that feedback.”

Apex Legends has indeed lacked consistent alternative modes beyond its core battle royale for a while, particularly when Arenas was unavailable. While impressive LTMs like `Three Strikes` have offered unique excitement, they are temporary. Although Mixtape features Team Death Match, Gun Run, and Control, these modes are always rotating.

Wolski also noted, “This mode offers a more relaxed experience compared to traditional battle royale. It`s an action-packed, combat-focused take on battle royale. Besides revivals, we`re introducing numerous thrilling new features, including auto-looting, Evo weapons, and the Evo collection system, all designed to get players back into the fight faster.”

A powerful, entirely new weapon unveiled at the press event, exclusive to Wild Card, is a baseball bat. Players can charge and swing it to strategically launch opponents, potentially leading to quick knockouts.

Wolski elaborated on the bat`s capabilities: “In the final ring, you can literally knock enemies out of bounds, causing them to die to the ring or fall off the edge of Kings Canyon. This can even be done to teammates. We`re eager to see player creativity with this weapon, as it allows for unique maneuvers, like launching a teammate with the bat and then grappling to them with Pathfinder to propel yourself further. This is our first weapon heavily leveraging physics, so it`s incredibly exciting.”

Prioritizing Fun Over Balance

Wild Card appears to emphasize pure enjoyment and excitement through its `wild card` system, where players can equip one new perk card per round, accumulating up to three total.

These cards offer potentially `overpowered` perks, such as team revivals upon an elimination, extended knockback distance with the bat, or a wall run, among other chaotic effects. Season 26 will launch with seven wild cards, with plans to introduce new ones and rotate existing options to eventually create a pool of `dozens,` as per Ruvolo.

Given these powerful cards, questions arose regarding balancing, or even if balance was a significant concern for the mode.

Wolski responded, “While we always aim for every mode to be competitive and fair, Wild Card is explicitly designed for pushing boundaries and experimenting with new mechanics, especially allowing multiple players to select the same Legend within a squad.”

Emphasizing fun, Wild Card permits `Legend stacking,` enabling teammates to choose the same Legend, deviating from the typical one-Legend-per-player restriction. Players could, for example, pick three Bangalores to create a persistent smoke screen across the map.

Wolski admitted that “introducing this feature was quite contentious during development, with concerns about balance. However, we`re letting it play out to observe how players engage with it. We`ve never implemented something like this as a permanent mode, so we`re very keen to see how the meta evolves within Wild Card itself. Naturally, we`ll address any severely broken or exploitable elements, but generally, we`re giving players freedom to experiment.”

While cards are actively selected and equipped, Wild Card also introduces Evo Orbs, a new passive pickup. These orbs upgrade weapons, restore shields, and charge ultimate abilities, among other benefits. They appear highly useful, representing a novel application of the Evo system.

Ruvolo stated, “We aimed to fundamentally alter how Evo functions in this mode. Initially, we removed Evo armor; all players start with blue shields. Evo progression now applies to weapons: we`ve reinstated the kitted weapons system, allowing players to collect Evo and upgrade their weapon tiers from white to blue, purple, gold, and so forth, eliminating the need to search for attachments. Evo Orbs serve as a means to gain this XP, obtainable as rewards for eliminations or found within the general loot pool.”

Evo Orbs are crucial to the Wild Card experience, influencing nearly every core gameplay aspect. They can even aid survival by instantly activating health regeneration. Unlike standard play, Wild Card lacks traditional healing items like syringes or med kits; instead, a passive healing system activates after six seconds, and Evo Orbs immediately trigger this regeneration upon collection.

Evo Orbs can be acquired from eliminated players, as ground loot, or within loot bins alongside other items. Occasionally, players might even discover an `Evo jackpot,` yielding a large quantity of orbs from a single container.

Quality of Life Enhancements Lead to Better Fights

These new features aim to streamline gameplay, fostering a fast-paced, enjoyable party mode. Wild Card matches average around 15 minutes due to fewer rounds compared to standard battle royale.

The ring closes faster but inflicts less damage, as traditional healing items are absent. New ziprails and gravity cannons facilitate more efficient map rotation and ring escapes. Looting is also more streamlined, with ammunition automatically added to inventory, though weapons remain in deathboxes.

Weapon upgrade animations have also been optimized. Unlike `Control,` where upgrading could interrupt combat flow, Wild Card`s animations are non-intrusive. Such adjustments are designed to keep players focused on the most engaging aspects of the battle royale.

Wild Card takes the place of Arenas, which made a brief comeback in Season 25. When questioned about Arenas returning permanently, design director Evan Nikolich stated, “We`re not making any commitments currently. We want the flexibility to take it offline and refine it. It`s not yet achieving the player engagement we desire.”

This aligns with Respawn Entertainment`s original rationale for removing Arenas in Season 16: low player counts and data indicating a lack of sustained interest.

Nikolich elaborated, “While engagement was initially strong, it declined towards the end of Season 25. We will continue to iterate on it until we see consistent player interest.”

The interview concluded with a discussion on how the team believes they`ve prepared Apex Legends for the latter half of the year.

Wolski explained, “Specifically for Wild Card, we`ve established a robust foundation for future seasonal updates. A dedicated team works solely on Wild Card, independent of the main battle royale team, ensuring the mode receives seasonal iterations. Season 26 introduces the baseball bat as its first signature weapon, alongside the wild cards. Moving forward, each season will see the addition of new wild cards, weapons, equipment, and other unique items to continually refresh the experience. So, with Wild Card, we`ve truly set the stage for the future.”

Lead Legend designer Josh Mohan further mentioned that Respawn aims to enhance its responsiveness to the Apex community as new content is introduced.

Mohan concluded, “I believe the most significant achievement in the first half of 2025 has been establishing a superior framework for engaging with our audience and planning future content. We`ve become much more agile in responding to community feedback regarding the game`s state, and by acting more frequently, we`re improving our ability to swiftly address issues. This is a virtuous cycle we intend to perpetuate.”

Apex Legends is available across Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and PC, with all platforms supporting cross-play and cross-progression.
