Animal Well, a critically acclaimed puzzle Metroidvania that took the gaming world by surprise in 2024, quickly earned rave reviews from both critics and players, even securing a nomination for Best Debut Indie Game at the 2024 Video Game Awards. While the game initially launched digitally on PC and consoles and had two prior small-batch physical releases from Limited Run Games (now sold out) and Lost in Cult, an official, wider physical release for Nintendo Switch and PS5 is now confirmed for later this year. A precise launch date for this new physical version, as well as any specific preorder bonuses, have not yet been announced. However, preorders for the PS5 and Switch editions are already live for $35.
Critical Acclaim and Gameplay Experience
GameSpot`s review of Animal Well lauded it with an impressive 9/10, praising its inventive items, tense enemy encounters, and surreal visual design. Critic Richard Wakeling highlighted the game`s abundant “pleasant surprises,” from its unique approach to item usage to the atmospheric, “bizarre, neon-soaked world.” He concluded that “Animal Well might look antiquated and familiar at first glance, but this well is cavernous and unpredictable.” This forthcoming physical edition presents an excellent opportunity for players who haven`t yet experienced the game to finally delve into its depths.
Previous Limited Physical Releases
It`s worth noting that Limited Run Games and Lost in Cult previously offered physical editions of Animal Well, though these were significantly smaller print runs compared to the newly announced standard version. The Limited Run edition has been sold out for some time. However, Lost in Cult`s Animal Well Exclusive Variant, featuring unique cover art by Derek Yu (creator of Spelunky, UFO 50), is still available directly from their website for those who prefer not to wait for the new standard release. Lost in Cult also offers other Animal Well merchandise, including a vinyl soundtrack and the beautiful hardcover “Animal Well: Design Works” book, which chronicles the game`s development. These items can even be bundled to create a personalized collector`s edition. As these are limited quantities, interested buyers are advised to act quickly.
This new physical edition features different cover art from the Limited Run and Lost in Cult versions. It will come with the base game plus the latest patches right on the cartridge or disc. Both the Switch and PS5 versions are “DoesItPlay” approved, meaning you can start playing directly from the cartridge or disc without the need for additional downloads or an internet connection.
