Following Sony`s recent decision to increase the PlayStation 5 price in the US, analyst Daniel Ahmad suggests that Nintendo might also raise the price of its Switch 2 console, partially due to rising tariffs.
Ahmad noted that Nintendo had considered a price increase for the Switch 2 earlier this year when tariffs on Vietnamese-produced consoles stood at 10%. With this tariff now doubled to 20%, it significantly impacts Nintendo`s profitability, according to Ahmad.
He anticipates that while Nintendo may hold off on an immediate price increase, they might revisit the decision in 2026, after the peak holiday shopping period.
Nintendo itself has previously hinted at a potential price increase for the Switch 2. Earlier this year, upon raising the price of the original Switch, the company stated that “price adjustments may be necessary in the future” for its successor.
Currently, the Switch 2 is priced at $450 for the console alone, or $500 with a Mario Kart World bundle. The console has seen considerable success since its June launch, selling over 6 million units. Nintendo projects to sell 15 million Switch 2 consoles by the end of its current fiscal year in March 2026.
Despite launching at a higher price point than the original Switch (even accounting for inflation), the cost didn`t deter millions of early adopters. However, analyst Mat Piscatella suggests that the console`s performance during the 2025 holiday season will be its “next test.”
He elaborated, “The enthusiast audience certainly showed up day one. Now we have to see if they can successfully transition to the mass market gift buyer. That`s the next test.”
Initial Switch 2 sales were partly shielded from these higher tariffs as Nintendo had stockpiled units before the rates increased. While these tariffs, implemented by Trump`s executive order, aim to incentivize US manufacturing, Nintendo has stated that US assembly of Switch consoles is not feasible in the near future.
Currently, Trump faces several lawsuits challenging his authority to impose such tariffs on other nations.
