8BitDo N64 Bluetooth Controller Set to Launch for Nintendo Switch & PC

8BitDo`s updated wireless controller for the Nintendo 64 is set to release on Wednesday, July 30. This launch date was confirmed by the manufacturer. The 8BitDo 64 Bluetooth Controller was initially unveiled alongside the Analogue 3D console last October. Due to multiple delays in the release of Analogue`s 4K Nintendo 64 system, the 8BitDo 64 Bluetooth controller, developed in partnership with Analogue, also experienced two postponements.

While primarily designed for the Analogue 3D console, this controller is broadly compatible with PC, Nintendo Switch, and Android devices. For Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack subscribers, it provides an enhanced and authentic experience for playing classic N64 titles. The 8BitDo 64 Bluetooth Controller is available for preorder at $40, offered in both white and black color options.

Queries regarding the controller`s compatibility with the upcoming Switch 2 have been directed to 8BitDo. Several of their existing controllers received firmware updates upon the Switch 2`s launch in June, confirming their support. Given that 8BitDo`s latest Switch-compatible controllers, such as the Ultimate 2 Bluetooth, All-Button Arcade, and the forthcoming Pro 3 Bluetooth, are all Switch 2 compatible, it would be unexpected if the 64 Controller did not also function with Nintendo`s new console.

Detailed Features of the 8BitDo 64 Bluetooth Controller

The 8BitDo 64 Controller is a wireless Bluetooth gamepad incorporating all the necessary buttons for N64 gaming, but reimagined within a modern design akin to 8BitDo`s Ultimate Controller series.

Its redesigned layout places the joystick on the left side. This is a Hall Effect joystick with a metal ring, ensuring smooth and precise control, consistent with other 8BitDo controllers utilizing this technology. Hall Effect sensors prevent stick drift, and metal rings enhance durability.

8BitDo replicated the N64 control stick`s distinct surface by incorporating three circular ridges. Thankfully, it features a rubberized stick cap, a notable improvement over the original`s hard plastic. The controller also retains the octagonal stick gate, a feature Nintendo included in the original N64 controller to simulate an eight-way D-pad. The D-pad itself is relocated on the new controller but remains within a recessed design.

The prominent A/B buttons and the four C buttons retain the N64`s original layout, size, and shape. The shoulder buttons and triggers have been modernized. The shoulder buttons are labeled R and L, consistent with the N64 controller, while both top triggers function as Z buttons (the original N64 Z button was on the middle grip`s underside). These dual triggers enhance versatility for non-N64 games.

The large Start button makes a return, accompanied by three additional buttons common to many 8BitDo Switch controllers: Minus (Select), 8BitDo (Home), and Turbo. The Turbo function allows for rapid, repeated inputs when assigned to and held on a specific button.

Users can fully customize controls and settings via the 8BitDo Ultimate Software, available for both desktop and mobile. The controller supports two input modes: S-Input (Switch) and D-Input. Although equipped with built-in rumble motors, vibration functionality is currently restricted to the Analogue 3D and Nintendo Switch platforms.

Other Upcoming 8BitDo Releases

Beyond the N64 controller, 8BitDo is also set to release the Pro 3 Bluetooth Gamepad on August 12 for $70. This highly customizable, retro-styled wireless controller boasts broad compatibility, including Nintendo Switch 2, original Switch, PC, Apple, and Android devices.

Understanding the Analogue 3D

The Analogue 3D represents the latest FPGA console from the esteemed retro hardware manufacturer. Initial preorders for this $250 console sold out swiftly last October. Enthusiasts keen on acquiring one should monitor for potential restocks following its anticipated late August launch.

This console facilitates playing original N64 game cartridges with precise hardware emulation, ensuring 100% compatibility and up to 4K resolution output. It features four controller ports, accommodating genuine Nintendo 64 three-pronged controllers or various third-party wired alternatives. Notably, the Analogue 3D does not include a controller, making the 8BitDo 64 Bluetooth Controller or other compatible gamepads a necessary separate purchase.

For those seeking alternatives, pre-owned N64 controllers can be found at retailers, or numerous affordable replicas of the original controller are available online.
