While Guerrilla Games is busy with a multiplayer project and Horizon 3, questions arise about the fate of Horizon Steel Frontiers. Despite its strong ties to the popular Horizon franchise, this MMO game is currently not planned for release on PlayStation 5.
In a recent interview, Jonghyun “JJ” Jin, head of NC America, confirmed the active involvement of Guerrilla Games and Sony in the project’s development. The creators of the original series are closely monitoring the MMO’s progress to ensure it meets the high quality standards and deep lore of the Horizon universe. Jin emphasized at GDC 2026 that development is progressing excellently:
“Work is going very well. The team is collaborating closely with Guerrilla Games and Sony Interactive Entertainment, and the game itself looks truly magnificent – it’s a beautiful, impressive world where humanity, nature, and technology clash.”
Jin expressed confidence that the developers have managed to create a “strong MMO experience.” This statement refutes earlier rumors from 2025 about the project’s cancellation. Currently, only cross-play between PC and mobile devices has been confirmed, but the studio head does not rule out the possibility of expanding to other platforms:
“The game was announced with cross-play between mobile devices and PC – that’s all I can confirm right now. Who knows, maybe there will be something more.”
The game’s events will unfold in the vast Deadlands region (based on Arizona and New Mexico). Instead of Aloy, players will be able to create their own custom hunters. Raids, cooperative machine hunting, an open world, and developed social systems are promised. A release date has not yet been announced, but news about upcoming testing phases is expected in 2026.
