The developers of the highly anticipated game Slay the Spire 2 have officially confirmed their commitment to exclude all microtransactions from the project, even in light of fans expressing a willingness to purchase any potential additional content.
Ahead of the game’s Early Access release, Casey Yano, co-founder of Mega Crit, the studio behind Slay the Spire 2, spoke with Destructoid journalists, addressing various questions about the game’s future direction.
Yano explicitly stated that Slay the Spire 2 would feature no additional paid content, as the studio “hates microtransactions.” He acknowledged that “many of our players threaten to buy all the cosmetic items we ever release,” yet the team is dedicated to ensuring all players have access to the same in-game content. Therefore, the purchase of the game itself will remain the sole mandatory expense.
Nonetheless, the development team intends to regularly expand the game with new content as it progresses towards its 1.0 release. Yano noted that the Early Access version currently “lacks a lot of content,” so the studio will focus on introducing “pure content” – new mechanics, cards, and other elements that directly influence and enhance gameplay.
The studio is also looking forward to active participation from the modding community. According to Yano, Slay the Spire 2’s architecture is designed to allow significant changes to its code, offering users almost limitless possibilities for creating custom modifications. The team is already working to streamline this process, though it’s not yet confirmed whether a dedicated modding tool will be released.
However, Yano refrained from revealing a detailed development roadmap. He explained that the developers are working on the game in “real-time” and are concerned that too frequent or minor changes might not be noticed by players.
