Even extensive experience working on iconic games no longer guarantees employment in the modern gaming industry, where luck sometimes plays as significant a role as qualifications.
Rob Carr, a former audio engineer at Rockstar Games, who contributed to hits like Grand Theft Auto V, L.A. Noire, and Red Dead Redemption, recently shared his challenging experience. Despite boasting two decades of experience and an impressive portfolio, he has found it extremely difficult to secure a new position.
Carr explained that while his 20 years of experience, including work on some of the world’s biggest projects, would have been sufficient for job security five years ago, today the industry is saturated with numerous other specialists possessing identical backgrounds. This creates an incredibly competitive job market.
He recounted reaching the final stages of several hiring processes but ultimately receiving no job offers. When seeking feedback, he was often told that the decision was almost arbitrary, with another candidate simply being “a slightly better fit for current needs.” Carr likened the current job search to “flipping a coin,” where success often hinges on chance rather than solely on demonstrable qualifications.
Currently, Rob Carr is channeling his expertise into developing his own game, titled Nyrkkipöytä.
