The recent events at Epic Games are sparking significant concern among some within the gaming industry. The company’s recent large-scale layoffs have not gone unnoticed.
Chet Faliszek, a former Valve writer known for his contributions to franchises like Left 4 Dead, Half-Life, and Counter-Strike, openly voiced his perplexity regarding Tim Sweeney’s latest decisions. Faliszek questioned how Epic employees could maintain motivation when the company has just laid off approximately a thousand people and is shutting down several projects, including Fortnite Rocket Racing, Ballistic, and Festival Battle Stage. He emphasized that Epic Games is not a public company, meaning these layoff decisions are not driven by stock market pressure but are a direct result of Tim Sweeney’s choices. Faliszek also pointed out that the number of employees laid off exceeds Valve’s entire workforce.

According to Faliszek, Sweeney appears to have completely moved away from developing diverse games, focusing exclusively on a single project – Fortnite – with the aim of maximizing profit. The former Valve developer sarcastically remarked that, by all appearances, Gabe Newell demonstrates greater effectiveness when it comes to generating revenue. Faliszek concluded that Sweeney seems to have lost interest in creating anything new and has deviated from the original mission of game development.
