A recent discovery of a developer build of Grand Theft Auto IV at a garage sale has unveiled unexpected details about the game’s creation process. Thanks to this find, former Rockstar Games lead programmer, Obbe Vermeij, explained why the studio was forced to abandon the planned passenger ferry mechanic.
It turned out that water transport generated significant technical difficulties: the game’s physics engine couldn’t properly handle pedestrian AI and vehicle transportation. Liberty City residents constantly got stuck on ramps, and cars unnaturally rolled into the water.
As a result, to ensure game stability, the difficult decision was made to completely remove this ambitious feature, highlighting how many innovative ideas are sometimes left on the cutting room floor during game development.
