Ubisoft Faces New Lawsuit Over The Crew Server Shutdown

Ubisoft’s legal troubles continue to mount. The consumer protection association UFC-Que Choisir, with the support of activists from Stop Killing Games, has filed a new lawsuit against the company.

The core of the complaint is the permanent shutdown of servers for the online racing game, The Crew. This action has rendered the game completely unplayable for owners, as it originally lacked an offline mode (one was later developed by modders).

UFC-Que Choisir is seeking a landmark court decision on a fundamental question of consumer rights: “Does the purchase of a video game—whether in physical or digital form—grant players, at a minimum, the right to use the game independently of the publisher’s wishes and permission?”

The association argues that Ubisoft has infringed upon basic consumer rights by effectively confiscating their purchased property—a functional version of The Crew—through the server deactivation.
