Despite facing criticism and less-than-stellar viewership figures, Amazon remains fully committed to “The Rings of Power.”
The “Lord of the Rings” series, “The Rings of Power,” is set to conclude exactly as initially planned. Reports indicate that Amazon intends to fulfill its original agreement, delivering all five seasons as outlined in its contract with the estate of J.R.R. Tolkien, HarperCollins, and New Line Cinema.
The preliminary vision for a total of 50 episodes remains in effect. Sources suggest that Amazon’s leadership has reassured the show’s creators that they will be able to complete the entire narrative, even in the face of public criticism, inconsistent viewing metrics, and the substantial costs associated with its production.
With expenses covering rights acquisition, production, and marketing, “The Rings of Power” is projected to become the first television series to exceed a total budget of $1 billion. However, the terms of the deal stipulate that an early cancellation would obligate Amazon to pay a penalty of approximately $20 million for each unproduced season. This clause reportedly makes completing the series more economically viable for the company than halting production, for instance, after the third season.
Further bolstering the show’s continuation is the ongoing support from Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos. Conversely, previously rumored spin-off projects are now reportedly off the table due to their prohibitive costs.
Production for the third season has already wrapped. This upcoming season will delve into Sauron’s ascent and the forging of the One Ring. Its premiere is anticipated in 2026, with subsequent seasons expected to follow a release schedule of roughly every two years.
