The Future is Now: AAA Gaming Like Cyberpunk 2077 and RDR 2 on Flagship Smartphones

Mobile gaming has reached unprecedented heights, with today’s advanced smartphones capable of running demanding games without needing dedicated mobile versions.

The latest Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 processor enables the emulation of blockbuster titles such as Cyberpunk 2077, Red Dead Redemption 2, and Resident Evil Requiem. Tests on a REDMAGIC flagship phone demonstrated impressive performance for Requiem, achieving 80–90 FPS, effectively placing pocket-sized gaming on par with powerful gaming laptops.

However, this high level of performance comes with significant power demands. While initial readings mistakenly suggested 50W, the actual power consumption was confirmed at 24W. In comparison, Apple’s M5 processor in a MacBook requires less power for similar gaming loads, highlighting a key challenge for Qualcomm: how to maintain a high-performing chip without causing rapid battery drain or excessive overheating in a smartphone form factor.

Potential solutions include innovative cooling systems like Samsung’s Heat Pass. Yet, experts caution that these are merely addressing symptoms rather than the root cause. The ultimate path forward lies in fundamentally improving energy efficiency. Despite these hurdles, the outlook for mobile gaming remains promising; playing AAA titles is becoming a tangible reality for those equipped with a top-tier smartphone.
