The Accidental Origin of Kratos’s Iconic Look in God of War

The iconic look of Kratos from God of War, particularly his distinctive pale skin, emerged entirely by chance, a result of a creative oversight. Stig Asmussen, the lead environment artist, revealed that the original plan involved a different color scheme.

Game director David Jaffe once noticed an illustration by lead concept artist Charlie Wen. Wen hadn’t yet applied the final colors to Kratos’s skin, leaving him pale. Jaffe was struck by this unfinished appearance, describing it as “very cool.” Although it’s unclear if he immediately thought of covering Kratos in ash, this incident likely served as the catalyst for creating his recognizable look.

Kratos’s white skin perfectly complemented God of War’s visual style, which featured contrasting scenes with marble and reflective surfaces. Against such a backdrop, blood and vanquished enemies appeared particularly striking, enhancing the game’s overall somber aesthetic.
