Paradox Interactive, the acclaimed developer behind the popular space grand strategy game Stellaris, has announced a significant new accessibility feature. The upcoming update, version 4.3.3, will introduce an ‘Arachnophobia Mode’ to help players who experience discomfort or fear from spider-like visuals.
This new mode addresses a common issue for individuals with arachnophobia by allowing them to replace unsettling arachnid-like alien portraits with more neutral alternatives. The developers clarified that they have “scientifically categorized” specific in-game portraits as “spider-like” due to their visual characteristics, and for each of these, an alternative, less unsettling substitute has been created.
The 4.3.3 update is comprehensive, also bringing a host of other improvements, including various technical enhancements, refined AI behavior, and balance adjustments across the game’s systems.
Regarding the functionality of the new feature, the Stellaris team explained: “Arachnophobia Mode simply changes these portraits on your client. In multiplayer, everyone else will still see ‘spider’ portraits (unless they have enabled this setting themselves), and in-game events will still react appropriately based on the original species classification.” This ensures that the game’s narrative and multiplayer experience remain consistent for all players, while providing a tailored visual experience for those who need it.
Additionally, the developers noted that the underlying system could technically allow modders to create a ‘reverse mode,’ replacing all portraits with spider-themed ones, offering further customization for the community.
