Sony to Implement FSR Frame Generation in PlayStation: First Details Emerge

Mark Cerny, the architect behind PlayStation, is currently engaged in the development of Sony’s next-generation console. It appears that the ongoing close collaboration between Sony and AMD is set to introduce FSR Frame Generation support to future PlayStation platforms, potentially including the PS6 or even an updated PS5 Pro.

FSR Frame Generation is an AMD technology powered by machine learning, designed to create additional frames that are inserted between the frames already rendered by the game. In practice, this sophisticated technique is expected to significantly enhance visual smoothness and deliver a sensation of improved performance, all without requiring the system to render every single frame from its initial state.

The situation gained further clarity and excitement following a direct confirmation from Mark Cerny himself. This crucial information was revealed during a discussion with Digital Foundry, where the PlayStation architect elaborated on the partnership between Sony and AMD as part of a project internally known as Project Amethyst.

“I want to clarify a few points regarding our collaboration with AMD: the new PSSR uses the same jointly developed fundamental algorithm as FSR Redstone upscaling. FSR Frame Generation is also based on technology we created together. I am very pleased with the progress, and an equivalent frame generation library should appear on PlayStation platforms at some point.”

Cerny, however, refrained from specifying the exact PlayStation device that would first receive this advanced technology.

“Those are excellent questions… I can only say that we have no new releases planned for this year. And I would be happy to elaborate on this further in the future.”

— Mark Cerny

Based on these statements, the prevailing assumption is that FSR Frame Generation is primarily being prepared for the upcoming PS6 console. Nevertheless, the possibility of its integration into a potential PS5 Pro model is not entirely ruled out at this stage, leaving enthusiasts to speculate on the timing and platform for this significant performance enhancement.
