Sony Patent Hints at DualSense Evolution: Smartphone Integration for PS5 Controller

PlayStation may be preparing an innovative expansion to the gaming experience for PS5 owners. A recently discovered Sony patent proposes utilizing devices already common in every household to boost immersion and introduce new ways of interacting with game franchises.

According to the patent description, Sony is exploring the possibility of connecting a mobile phone to the controller. The plan is to attach the smartphone to the gamepad using a magnetic fixture, allowing it to function as an additional module that expands the classic controller’s capabilities. This integration would enable games to utilize the smartphone’s touch screen, gyroscope, camera, and motion sensors.

The patent suggests the smartphone could serve as a secondary display, showing maps, supplementary menus, or other relevant information, thereby keeping the main screen clearer. Furthermore, the company is considering using the phone’s camera for creating in-game avatars and implementing gameplay mechanics based on the physical movement of the device.

While the concept of using smartphones as auxiliary controllers isn’t entirely new, contemporary technology and connection stability could elevate this experience significantly. For now, this remains merely a patent, and it’s uncertain whether this feature will be implemented on the PS5 or become a hallmark of future PlayStation systems.
