Sony Cancels The Last of Us Multiplayer, Shifts Focus to Single-Player Excellence

The Last of Us Multiplayer was 80% complete before cancellation

Despite significant investments and being approximately 80% complete, the multiplayer project set in The Last of Us universe has been canceled.

According to logger Lance E. Lee, citing project director Vineet Agarwal, the cancellation of this ambitious online title occurred just a day before its scheduled official announcement.

Reports indicate that Sony had been actively investing in online gaming since around 2020, aiming to strengthen its position in this market segment. The development of The Last of Us Online was progressing successfully, having reached roughly 80% completion and demonstrating strong internal results.

However, a shift in market dynamics post-COVID-19 pandemic saw a decline in interest in online entertainment. Many players began returning to their pre-pandemic lifestyles and office work, leading Sony to reevaluate its strategic priorities.

This situation presented Naughty Dog studio with a crucial decision: either continue development on the multiplayer project or dedicate its resources to a new single-player game led by Neil Druckmann. Ultimately, the studio chose to prioritize the new single-player experience, recognizing that such titles form the bedrock of Naughty Dog’s success, as opposed to the more experimental online ventures.
