Sony and Honda Scrap Plans for PlayStation Remote Play-Enabled Car

Sony Afeela Car at CES 2024

The collaborative project between Sony and Honda, known as Afeela, which aimed to integrate PlayStation Remote Play functionality into a vehicle, has officially been discontinued for its AFEELA 1 model.

Late last year, both companies had publicly stated that development was progressing according to schedule, with initial deliveries of the model in California anticipated as early as 2026. However, this strategy has since undergone a significant revision, meaning the project will not reach the market in its originally envisioned form.

Sony Honda Mobility (SHM) confirmed the cessation of development and the planned launch for the AFEELA 1, which was intended to be the second vehicle in the brand’s lineup. This decision was made after extensive discussions between Sony and Honda and came shortly after Honda re-evaluated its broader electrification strategy.

According to SHM’s statement, these strategic shifts mean the joint venture can no longer leverage certain technologies and assets that were initially slated to be provided by Honda. Consequently, the project has lost its “viable path” to market in its prior iteration.

Despite this setback for the AFEELA 1, Sony Honda Mobility itself is not being dissolved. The companies are continuing to engage in discussions regarding future business plans and exploring potential new directions for development within the joint venture.
