Shift Up, the studio behind the highly anticipated game Stellar Blade, recently offered insights into their distinctive approach to game development. Their creative process involves not only the tireless dedication of numerous developers but also a “secret weapon” housed in their office.
During a recent interview, Shift Up CEO Kim Hyung-tae explained the studio’s unique philosophy. He humorously stated that the studio’s new games are “created with the power of butts,” clarifying that this is a metaphorical expression referring to the developers’ unwavering persistence and long hours of focused work. Team members dedicate countless hours to their craft, meticulously refining and bringing their creative ideas to life.
As part of an office tour for journalists, the Stellar Blade developers showcased their collection of souvenirs and unveiled this “secret weapon”: a massive, full-body 3D scanning apparatus. Located conveniently next to the scanning room is a spacious changing area, emphasizing the hands-on nature of their process.
While traditional game development often involves designers creating concept art and then digitally modeling in 3D software, Shift Up employs a unique hybrid method. They combine digital techniques with physical sculpting. Developers craft intricate creatures out of clay, then utilize their advanced 3D scanner to digitize these physical models. This innovative approach allows for an extraordinary level of detail, capturing not just the overall form but also intricate elements like muscles and skin textures with remarkable fidelity.
