Rumors are circulating about significant management issues within Pearl Abyss, the studio behind the recently released Crimson Desert. A series of screenshots, purportedly containing testimonies from current and former developers, has recently surfaced within the gaming community.
According to these claims, Crimson Desert was originally conceived as an MMO prequel to Black Desert Online. However, after several years of development, the game’s concept was drastically altered, transforming it into a single-player project. This abrupt change meant that the final story version was only solidified shortly before release, potentially explaining its seemingly disjointed narrative.
The initial plot envisioned a tale of political intrigue: a young dethroned king seeking aid from the ‘Graymanes’ faction to reclaim his power. A central conflict would have revolved around control of the mineral-rich Crimson Desert, where resources were mined to create a unique ‘currency.’
Developers also reportedly highlighted problematic leadership. Managers, it’s alleged, excessively borrowed ideas from other popular games, aiming to integrate them into Crimson Desert. An example of this approach was the inclusion of floating islands, apparently inspired by The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. Ultimately, this led to a project comprising a collection of disparate ideas and mechanics.
Upon its release, Crimson Desert received ‘mixed’ reviews on Steam, with players citing concerns regarding controls, content, and overall gameplay.
