Rockstar Veteran Explains Zombie Content in Early GTA IV Build

An early build of Grand Theft Auto IV recently surfaced for dataminers, revealing materials related to zombie content within the game files. These discoveries included animations and icons for pickups and weapons, leading the community to speculate that Rockstar had originally planned and then cut a zombie mini-game or mode.

Players had hoped this content might allow modders to restore a special “game mode,” fueling discussions among fans.

To get clarity on the matter, fans sought an explanation for the “zombie mode” from Obbe Vermeij, former technical director at Rockstar North. Vermeij clarified that these were merely remnants of artist experiments, as they frequently tried to incorporate zombies into various parts of the game at the time, though such ideas rarely progressed far.

Vermeij stated: “I don’t recall zombies being in [Grand Theft Auto IV]. Artists were always trying to put zombies somewhere, but it never went very far.”
