It appears Sony is actively developing an innovative technology set to transform how game content is downloaded, particularly for the upcoming portable and main PlayStation 6 consoles. This development draws parallels to the Smart Delivery feature familiar to Xbox users.
According to recent leaks, the new system is dubbed PlayStation Play Go. Its primary goal is to enable developers to segment game files into specialized packages tailored for specific devices. This means a console will only download the data truly essential for its particular configuration.
Currently, it’s common practice for game distributions to include high-quality assets designed for the most powerful systems, even when a player uses a less capable device. Play Go technology aims to resolve this issue, significantly saving storage space and reducing game download times. This also aligns with conjectures that Sony is preparing a development environment optimized for power-saving modes and less powerful device configurations.
