PlayStation 6 Leaks: No Disc Drive, 1TB SSD, and Neural Compression for Smaller Games

Insider Kepler_L2, known for reliable leaks concerning AMD products, has shared new insights into the potential configuration of the PlayStation 6. According to his information, the base version of the console is expected to omit a disc drive entirely and come equipped with a 1TB SSD.

This strategic decision, the insider suggests, is aimed at reducing the device’s production cost, which he previously estimated to be around $760. While Sony might choose to subsidize the console once again, potentially launching it at approximately $699—a strategy seen with previous generations—Kepler_L2 indicates that such a scenario is not guaranteed this time.

The insider also addressed concerns among some users regarding the seemingly modest 1TB storage capacity and the absence of a physical disc drive, especially considering the ever-growing size of modern games. He explained that beyond cost-saving measures, Sony plans to implement advanced technology.

Support for neural network texture compression within the PS6 SDK is anticipated to significantly reduce game sizes, potentially even compared to the current console generation. This implies that despite the 1TB SSD, games for the PlayStation 6 will occupy considerably less disk space, making the storage capacity more efficient.
