Nintendo Switch 2 Voice Chat Becomes Paid Starting April 1st

Nintendo has announced a change in access policy for the GameChat feature on its Switch 2 console. Starting April 1st, users will require an active Nintendo Switch Online subscription to use the built-in voice communication system. March 31st will mark the last day of free access to GameChat, which was previously available as part of a “welcome offer.”

GameChat represents a significant improvement over the first Switch, where a separate mobile application was needed for voice chat. On the Switch 2, this feature is fully integrated: it includes a built-in microphone and is activated by pressing the “C” button on the right Joy-Con.

For most players who regularly engage in online multiplayer, this change might go unnoticed, as online mode typically already requires a Nintendo Switch Online subscription. However, the new policy will create an additional barrier for those playing games with free multiplayer, as they will now also need a paid subscription to use voice chat. Nintendo has not yet offered alternative solutions for users without an active Switch Online subscription.
