The first trailer for the highly anticipated new “Harry Potter” series has set a new benchmark for HBO and HBO Max, amassing an astonishing 277 million views within its initial 48 hours. This unprecedented figure more than doubled the previous record holder, which was likely one of the network’s fantasy titans like “House of the Dragon” or “Game of Thrones.”
Unveiled on March 26, the trailer provided fans with their first comprehensive glimpse into the reimagined world of Hogwarts. It introduced the core trio: Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger, and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley.
The preview also revealed key adult characters, including John Lithgow as Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as McGonagall, Nick Frost in the role of Hagrid, and Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape.
Despite the immense viewership, public reception to the trailer has been varied. While many viewers expressed excitement and welcomed the return of the beloved franchise, others voiced criticism regarding the visual aesthetics, casting choices, and the overall concept of a reboot.
Regardless of the mixed reactions, HBO is committed to the long-term development of the series, planning to dedicate a full season to each of J.K. Rowling’s original novels. The premiere of the inaugural season is currently slated for December 2026.
