Mortal Kombat 2 Revealed as Longest Film in Franchise History, Runtime Details Emerge

Mortal Kombat 2 movie still featuring characters in a fight scene

The live-action adaptation of the popular Mortal Kombat series is set to return with an even grander and more ambitious sequel.

The upcoming action film, Mortal Kombat 2, will officially be the longest installment in the cinematic franchise’s history. According to data from AMC theaters, the sequel will run for 116 minutes, surpassing the 2021 movie by six minutes (which was 110 minutes).

While a mere six-minute difference might seem minor, for a project boasting such an extensive cast, it could hold more significance than initially perceived. Director Simon McQuoid previously stated that the sequel’s scope expanded as the first film gained traction on streaming platforms, ultimately leading to the creation of a large-scale summer blockbuster. Actor Karl Urban, who joined the cast, even went as far as to call the movie “the best video game adaptation ever made.”

The sequel directly continues the events of the first film following Shang Tsung’s banishment, escalating the conflict to an entirely new level where the champions of Earthrealm must confront Shao Kahn.

Actors Lewis Tan, Jessica McNamee, and Josh Lawson are set to reprise their roles. Additionally, the film will introduce new but familiar characters from the series, including Kitana, portrayed by Adeline Rudolph.

The global premiere of Mortal Kombat 2 is scheduled for May 8, 2026. Meanwhile, according to hints from producer Todd Garner, the script for a potential third installment is already complete.
