The character lineup for Marvel Rivals is expanding at a swift pace. With NetEase introducing two new heroes per season – one in each half – they are quickly cycling through popular Marvel characters. Fortunately, Marvel’s vast universe offers an abundance of heroes, allowing NetEase to postpone the creation of original characters for now.
Despite having permission to introduce original characters into Marvel Rivals, producer Danny Koo stated that the timing isn’t right. He explained that there are already “so many” well-known Marvel heroes scheduled for release, potentially extending through season 8.

Koo emphasized that “the game comes first,” assuring players that the immediate focus is on the core gameplay mechanics, not on designing new, original characters. He elaborated, “We have so many characters in Marvel; we’re not looking outside of Marvel. We even have collaborations with other Marvel games. Currently, we possess an immense amount of content.”
Introducing each new hero presents a myriad of challenges for the development team. These include managing community feedback, character selection dynamics, and ensuring fair balance among the existing roster. This complexity grows with every addition, and player sentiment regarding current balancing has been largely negative. Significant grievances point to nerfs disproportionately affecting non-Strategist heroes and balance updates that seem illogical to the player base.

Beyond balancing concerns, NetEase recently addressed an “incentivized throwing epidemic,” where players were paid to intentionally lose matches, often targeting streamers. In response, NetEase implemented a “Victim Compensation Protocol” to assist affected players, though the situation clearly caused significant difficulties. Despite these challenges, Koo reaffirmed, “I don’t think heroes will be a problem.”
Currently, NetEase’s primary concern appears to be the user interface (UI). Given the multitude of heroes, events, and other features, navigating Marvel Rivals’ UI can be challenging. The clear objective is to optimize the game for maximum ease of play.
Koo elaborated, “It’s largely about UI optimization. We need to consider questions like, ‘Which are your favorite heroes you want readily accessible?’ and ‘What new characters do you want to try?’ These are perennial challenges, arising every season. Furthermore, if the meta shifts, players will ask, ‘How do I select those specific characters?’ We are committed to collaboratively determining the best way to present this information to our players.”
