Marathon’s Apex Three-Player Compiler Boss Succumbs to Solo Player, Stuns Community

The latest map in Marathon, Cryo Archive, presents an immense challenge. Its ultimate test, the Compiler boss battle, is widely considered an almost insurmountable obstacle for most players, especially given its intended three-player design.

To confront the Compiler, players must first gather six rare keys from other maps. These keys unlock corresponding vaults within Cryo Archive, each containing a unique subroutine item. The process is fraught with peril: players risk losing keys if defeated, and previously, the subroutine wasn’t guaranteed to spawn even after unlocking a vault. Thankfully, developers are addressing this, ensuring a 100% subroutine spawn rate from this weekend.

Despite the perceived impossibility, one player remarkably conquered Cryo Archive solo in less than a week, managing it in just eight attempts. This incredible feat is quite a humbling experience for those of us still struggling.

The distinction of achieving the world’s first solo Compiler kill goes to TheSnazzzyRock, a player renowned for mastering solo runs of Destiny’s most formidable activities, including Pantheon, Last Wish, and Deep Stone Crypt. Even with his track record, the sheer speed and success of this accomplishment remain astonishing.

Intriguingly, Snazzzy’s team was initially vying for the overall world’s first completion of the map. However, poor luck with the subroutine spawn prevented their victory, allowing Tyraxe’s team to claim that title.

Despite this setback, Snazzzy and his team demonstrated commendable sportsmanship. “Our theory to open vault 7 was, funnily enough, spot on correct and we helped [Tyraxe’s team] by giving them our idea,” he shared.

Following the team’s close call for the world’s first, Snazzzy was motivated to elevate the challenge further by attempting a solo run against the boss. With Cryo Archive not supporting solo queues, his teammates Tcibz and P8int observed his impressive endeavor.

For those aspiring to emulate this remarkable achievement, Snazzzy generously divulged his successful loadout:

  • Cores: Ambush and Ghost Protocol (for extended smoke duration and longer invisibility).
  • Implants: Regen V4, Survival Kit, and Distance Runner (noted as potentially unoptimized, suggesting room for further refinement).
  • Shield: A Gold shield equipped with an invisibility modification.
  • Backpack: A Gold backpack fitted with an ammo mod for passive weapon reloading.
  • Primary Weapon: The Biotoxic Disinjector, crucial for significant boss damage (a rare red-quality weapon typically acquired by defeating the Compiler or looting it from others).
  • Secondary Weapon: A Gold Bully SMG featuring the Punishment chip for increased damage output.
  • Consumables: A generous supply of EMP grenades, smoke grenades, various healing items (Panacea Kits, Self Revives), ample ammo, and Energy Amps.

His strategy predominantly involved maintaining distance, unleashing damage on the Compiler with the Biotoxic Disinjector and Bully, and strategically deploying smoke grenades to safely interact with terminals as needed. This intelligent approach is vital when tackling such a formidable challenge alone. Do you believe you possess the necessary skills? Give it a try! Personally, I’m staying far away from a solo attempt—at least for now.
