Bungie has released a new patch for its shooter Marathon, addressing a popular and deemed unfair exploit related to the “Thief” character’s movement. This update is part of the developers’ ongoing efforts to maintain the game’s long-term balance.
A key change is the fix for a bug that allowed the Thief to retain momentum after using her grappling hook, enabling unnaturally fast traversal across the map. While popular among seasoned players, Bungie identified this technique as detrimental to the overall gameplay experience.
In their patch notes, the developers explained their design philosophy: high-speed movement and aggressive playstyles should always come with a tangible cost, whether it’s resource depletion, overheating, or increased risk. They also affirmed their commitment to eliminating similar exploits in the future.
Beyond the Thief’s movement bug, the update introduces changes to the “Outpost” map. A passage through a broken wing in the central zone has been re-opened, having previously been closed due to balance issues that allowed players to enter too easily and quickly. Bungie states that a solution has now been implemented, and access is restored.
