Mass layoffs at Epic Games, which saw over a thousand employees dismissed, have sparked significant debate within the industry. The situation drew particular scrutiny following comments from Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney.
Sweeney stated that the job market would soon be enriched with “specialists of a unique level,” implying that the dismissed employees, having worked at Epic, were among the best in the industry. While ostensibly an attempt to support the laid-off staff, this rhetoric caused considerable irritation among professionals.
Michael Douse, Director of Publishing at Larian Studios, offered a particularly strong rebuke. He characterized Sweeney’s words as an effort to “repackage” the layoffs, likening it to saying: “I didn’t fire a thousand people – I flooded the market with unique talent.” Douse condemned this phrasing as an example of “verbal acrobatics” and “corporate rot,” suggesting it revealed a significant detachment from the true state of affairs in the industry.
