Kyoto Animation has released new information regarding its upcoming anime series, “The Story of Electricity in the Twentieth Century.” The studio presented a fresh trailer and a key visual, officially confirming the premiere date: the series will launch on July 5, 2026, exclusively on Netflix.
The narrative unfolds in an alternative version of Kyoto during the early 20th century. In this reimagined world, technological progress veered in a different direction; humanity focused its development on steam-powered machinery, leaving electricity as an unfulfilled dream. The city is perpetually shrouded in smoke, and the very concept of an “age of electricity” is perceived as an almost impossible fantasy.
At the core of the story are two teenagers who have endured profound personal losses. Sakamoto Kihachi grieves for his brother, with whom he once shared aspirations of an electric future. Momokawa Inako mourns her deceased mother, yet strives to maintain control over her emotions. Their paths intersect, leading the protagonists to unite in a quest to locate the “Twentieth Century Electric Records,” hoping to bring about a transformative change in their world.
The anime is an adaptation of Hiro Yuki’s light novel, which features illustrations by Kazumi Ikeda. Minoru Ota is directing the project, while Tatsuhiko Urahata is responsible for the screenplay.
