Marvel Studios has actively commenced the production of the second season for its standalone animated series, stemming from the “What If…?” universe.
Brad Winderbaum, Head of Marvel’s Television, Streaming, and Animation division, confirmed that the development of the “Marvel Zombies” sequel has progressed beyond the conceptualization phase. In a recent appearance on The Escape Pod podcast, he stated that he has already reviewed early versions of the second season’s initial scenes.
“It’s insane. I can’t reveal anything, but there are things in it that the MCU has never done before,” shared Brad Winderbaum.
Back in January, Winderbaum only mentioned that showrunner Bryan Andrews had returned to work, with the team actively brainstorming ideas for the continuation, even though the project hadn’t officially received a “green light” at that time. The situation is now clearer, as the existence of animatics confirms that the project is in an active development phase.
The first season of “Marvel Zombies,” which premiered on Disney+ in 2025, stood out as one of the studio’s more unconventional offerings. This series marked Marvel’s first animated project to receive an “adults-only” rating, evolving from a “What If…?” episode. It presented an alternate MCU where familiar superheroes succumb to a zombie apocalypse. Despite receiving moderately reserved reviews from critics and audiences on aggregators (around 66%), the show performed strongly on Disney+, prompting Marvel to consider a continuation.
