While high-budget AAA projects frequently stumble, independent developers continue to delight players with unexpected triumphs. The latest shining example is “Dispatch” from AdHoc Studio, whose path to success was clouded by widespread skepticism from publishers.
Studio heads, Nick Herman and Michael Chung, proudly announced that their narrative superhero adventure has already sold over 4 million copies. This impressive achievement comes despite years of searching for funding, during which the team heard only rejections.
Herman revealed that for seven years, they attended numerous conferences, attempting to convince investors of Dispatch’s potential. In the rapidly evolving gaming industry, major publishers were unwilling to take risks, constantly reiterating: “Games like this don’t sell anymore.” The developers even had to withhold key details of the project, such as its episodic format, as that single word instantly deterred potential partners.
Having overcome all obstacles and proven their critics wrong, the creators of Dispatch are now enjoying their well-deserved success. Their story confirms that bold and original ideas continue to resonate with PC and console audiences, despite the conservatism of large corporations.
