US Explains Temporary Approval for India's Russian Oil Imports Amidst Global Market Volatility
U.S. Energy Minister Chris Wright stated that the 30-day authorization for India to import Russian oil does not signify a change in Washington's policy towards Moscow.
Wright explained that this White House decision is driven by the desire to stabilize global oil prices amidst the escalating Middle East conflict. The release of Russian oil from tankers onto the global market is expected to alleviate current price pressures. The Minister clarified that due to restrictions in the Strait of Hormuz and rising energy prices, the U.S. urged India to purchase this oil and process it at its refineries.
He specifically noted the short-term nature of this measure, emphasizing that it should not be a cause for concern regarding long-term policy shifts.
Wright previously stated that the U.S. intends to weaken Iran before deploying military convoys to escort vessels through the Strait of Hormuz. According to him, this will be done as quickly as possible, as American military resources are currently focused on "suppressing Iran's ability to cause harm."
