PS6 May Be Weaker Than Xbox's Project Helix, But Does It Matter? A Digital Foundry Analysis
Initial leaks regarding the performance of the PlayStation 6 (PS6) and Xbox's Project Helix have surfaced. Digital Foundry experts have analyzed this preliminary information, concluding that any potential performance advantage Microsoft might have won't necessarily be a decisive factor.
According to insiders, both next-generation consoles are being developed in collaboration with AMD, featuring Zen 6 architecture for their CPUs and RDNA 5 for graphics. Rumors suggest Project Helix will utilize a 192-bit memory bus, compared to the PS6's 160-bit bus, potentially giving Microsoft's system higher memory bandwidth.
Processor configurations also differ. Project Helix is rumored to feature three high-performance Zen 6 cores alongside eight power-efficient Zen 6c cores. The PS6, conversely, is reportedly expected to primarily use Zen 6c cores with additional low-power blocks.
Graphical capabilities show further divergence. The Xbox could potentially have up to 68 RDNA 5 compute units (CUs), while the PS6 might have around 54. However, such raw CU comparisons don't always translate directly to real-world performance; for instance, the current-gen PS5 with 36 CUs competes effectively with the Xbox Series X's 52 CUs.
Microsoft is reportedly investing in a powerful Neural Processing Unit (NPU) for AI tasks, estimated at around 110 TOPS. Sony, according to available information, plans to leverage GPU acceleration for machine learning. Both consoles are expected to utilize image reconstruction technologies like PSSR and FSR, which Sony and AMD are co-developing under Project Amethyst.
Digital Foundry emphasizes that even if Xbox proves to be approximately 20% more powerful, the difference in actual gameplay might be negligible. In the era of dynamic resolution and ML-driven upscaling, additional raw power often translates only to a slightly higher internal rendering resolution.
Analysts further speculate that Sony and Microsoft might adopt distinct strategies. The PS6 could remain a classic console, prioritizing affordability and novel gaming experiences. Project Helix, in contrast, might evolve into a "console PC," aiming to merge the Xbox and Windows ecosystems.
Should these leaks prove accurate, the next generation of consoles is set to significantly redefine the traditional rivalry between PlayStation and Xbox.
