The Iranian Council of Experts has selected the nation's new Supreme Leader. A member of the Council confirmed that the newly appointed leader shares the same surname, Khamenei, as the late spiritual leader of the Islamic Republic, Ali Khamenei.

"We have chosen a new leader [for Iran]. The surname Khamenei will continue with the new Supreme Leader," the Council member stated. However, the specific name of the chosen individual has not yet been publicly revealed.

Earlier, various media reports had circulated suggesting that Ali Khamenei's son, Mojtaba, was considered a likely successor. During that period, former US President Donald Trump had controversially declared such an arrangement unacceptable, emphasizing his view that he should have a say in the appointment of the Supreme Leader.
