Has Sony Given Up? PlayStation Studios Mobile Division Reportedly Ceases Operations
PlayStation may have completely abandoned its plans to adapt its game worlds for mobile platforms. Rumors have emerged about another round of layoffs within the company.
Sony's initial strategy involved building a broad portfolio of live-service games and simultaneously bringing major PlayStation brands to the mobile market. It appears neither of these directions will be fully realized as envisioned several years ago. Following challenges with live-service games and the cancellation of several projects, the mobile segment reportedly suffered similar setbacks.
According to recent reports, PlayStation has once again implemented staff reductions. MobileGamer.biz stated that "Sony has allegedly laid off around 50 employees within its Studio Business Group, including individuals associated with the PlayStation Studios Mobile division."
Furthermore, a LinkedIn post hinted that "PlayStation's mobile division might have been completely shut down." Sony has yet to provide a direct response regarding the department's status. Early reports of layoffs at PlayStation Studios previously surfaced via Jason Schreier of Bloomberg, but details specifically concerning the mobile segment went largely unnoticed at the time.
The situation remains ambiguous: MobileGamer.biz reports that development of MLB The Show Mobile is ongoing, as is Ratchet & Clank: Ranger Rumble (available in select countries). This could suggest that even with a potential department closure or restructuring, some games are still in progress. However, Sony's ambitious plans for conquering the mobile market now appear far less convincing.
