Analysts Predict Strong Box Office Opening for "Super Mario: Galactic Cinema"
The new animated film, "Super Mario: Galactic Cinema," is gearing up for one of the year's biggest debuts. According to analysts' estimates, it could gross approximately $350 million worldwide during its opening days. Roughly $175 million of this is expected from North America over its first five days, with an equal amount anticipated from international markets.
These projected earnings would position the film as the year's largest opening, significantly outperforming competitors like "Project: End of the World," which debuted with $141 million, and China's "Pegasus 3," which took in $152 million, largely from domestic revenues.
However, analysts are skeptical that this sequel will surpass the initial success of "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" from 2023, which opened to $387.8 million. Despite stronger advance ticket sales in the U.S. for the new installment compared to the first, global forecasts account for overall market dynamics. Nevertheless, even a more modest result for "Super Mario: Galactic Cinema" will solidify the franchise's status as one of the decade's leading animated blockbusters.
Interestingly, the strong commercial expectations contrast with critical reception. Similar to the first film, press reviews remain lukewarm, with an approximate score of 45% on Rotten Tomatoes and 37 on Metacritic based on initial reviews. Primary criticisms revolve around the script and an overly convoluted plot.
Yet, the experience from 2023 demonstrated that critical lukewarmness is not a major obstacle for a Mario film. The previous movie also received mixed reviews but ultimately grossed over $1.36 billion globally and achieved an impressive 95% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.
In Russian cinemas, "Super Mario: Galactic Cinema" is scheduled to premiere on April 11.
