Gamers Saved NVIDIA From Collapse: Jensen Huang Reveals Company’s Past

NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang has shared previously undisclosed details about strategic decisions that shaped the company’s trajectory.

Huang revealed that the implementation of the CUDA software platform in 2006 was an extraordinarily risky move. The goal was to transform NVIDIA from a graphics chip manufacturer into a provider of comprehensive computing platforms. However, this initiative demanded colossal investments, even though the primary user base, gamers, showed no interest in advanced programming features.

The mandatory inclusion of CUDA technology in all consumer GeForce graphics cards led to a significant 50% increase in production costs, causing the company’s gross margin to plummet to a critical 30%. During that period, NVIDIA’s market capitalization fell to a mere $1.5 billion, posing a severe threat to its continued existence.

Nevertheless, the consistent development of the ecosystem over a decade eventually bore fruit. The early PC user base, primarily composed of gamers, became the company’s crucial advantage in the burgeoning field of artificial intelligence. Jensen Huang acknowledged that the product line aimed at gamers effectively funded and accelerated the development of the computing platform that now underpins the world’s most powerful workstations and servers.
