The co-creator of the acclaimed game “Caves of Qud” offered a candid and critical assessment of the current state of the gaming industry.

Brian Bucklew stated that despite significant technological advancements, players continue to receive games built upon outdated and repetitive design patterns.

The developer from Freehold Games highlighted the untapped potential of personal computers. According to him, while graphics cards are fully utilized, modern multi-core processors and high-speed internet often remain underutilized during gameplay.

Most contemporary hit games rely on repetitive and pre-scripted events. Instead of intricate world simulations, major companies prioritize impressive graphics, but mechanically, these projects are barely distinguishable from shooters released nearly two decades ago.

Bucklew emphasized that his studio aims to change this. Their upcoming projects are designed to fully leverage processor capabilities. The developers are focusing on complex systems where events will be generated in real-time, offering players greater freedom.

This approach mirrors the development philosophy behind “Caves of Qud.” Initially, the game’s incredible complexity proved daunting for PC users, but it ultimately established itself as a significant title.
