Fortnite Producer Asks for Patience Following Massive Layoffs at Epic Games

Fortnite producer Robby Williams has appealed to players for patience following the recent, extensive layoffs at Epic Games, acknowledging the significant uncertainty now facing the development team and the game itself. More than a thousand employees, approximately 20% of Epic’s workforce, were let go, a move partly attributed by CEO Tim Sweeney to challenges in consistently delivering “Fortnite magic” with each new season.

In a candid statement on social media, Williams expressed gratitude for the community’s support and empathy, urging players to extend that understanding to those impacted by the layoffs. He emphasized that the departures were not a reflection of the employees’ work or impact.

Williams warned that the path forward would be “very hard and painful,” stating, “Our teams will have to pick up the pieces and try to keep moving forward but we cannot even fully understand what kind of impacts this will have on the game for the rest of the year and likely beyond.” He assured players of the team’s dedication to creating the best possible game, but reiterated the need for patience during this challenging period marked by “truly gut-wrenching losses.”

The producer’s openness on such a sensitive topic highlights the apparent surprise and internal uncertainty within Epic Games regarding the future. While CEO Tim Sweeney has announced a company meeting for March 26 to detail the roadmap, the sheer scale of the layoffs suggests that Fortnite and its development team are likely to face a challenging year ahead.
