A former Destiny 2 developer has shed light on a significant error made by Bungie, one that fans haven’t forgiven even years later. The core issue revolves around the removal of content—for which players had already paid—with the release of the ‘Beyond Light’ expansion.
Within the Destiny community, this process is known as the ‘Content Vault.’ Previously purchased materials, including ‘The Red War’ campaign, ‘Curse of Osiris’ and ‘Warmind’ expansions, several raids, and even the ‘Forsaken’ campaign, were effectively archived and removed from the game.
Max Nichols, a former Destiny developer, detailed this content ‘vaulting’ process and his involvement in it on his website. Nichols worked at Bungie for over nine years, creating new missions and modes, updating existing content, and actively participating in the Content Vault initiative.
According to Nichols, ‘Beyond Light’ introduced a major engine overhaul that was incompatible with all existing game materials. This necessitated re-porting the entire content library, a task that required significant labor and the recruitment of new staff. Nichols personally led the hiring of 20 junior technical designers to address this challenge.
