Final Fantasy IX Remake Development Still Frozen, Says Insider

Despite persistent rumors and past leaks, Square Enix shows no immediate intention to revisit the Final Fantasy IX remake project, which reportedly remains on indefinite hold.

Fresh reports from insider NateTheHate indicate that the development of a Final Fantasy IX remake is still stalled. According to NateTheHate, there’s no visible progress on the project, which is currently on an indefinite pause. However, the insider also noted that for Square Enix, a “frozen” status doesn’t always imply outright cancellation; the company might resume development at a later stage, but for now, the situation is unchanged.

A potential remake of the beloved JRPG has been a topic of discussion for several years, yet Square Enix has never officially confirmed its existence. A significant piece of evidence fueling these hopes was the Nvidia database leak from a few years ago.

This leak famously listed numerous unannounced titles, many of which have since been officially revealed and released, such as the Resident Evil 4 remake, Dragon’s Dogma 2, and Kingdom Hearts IV.

In light of this, the Final Fantasy IX remake stands out as one of the few entries from that substantial leak that has yet to see a public announcement. Furthermore, it remains uncertain how far, if at all, development progressed before its apparent freeze.

Despite the remake’s uncertain future, Square Enix is actively expanding the FFIX universe through other avenues. These include an upcoming illustrated prequel book and an animated series. The animated show is set after the events of the original game and follows the adventures of black mage Vivi Ornitier’s children.
