According to industry analyst Joost van Dreunen, Epic Games is currently navigating a challenging period, despite the enduring success of its flagship game, Fortnite.
The expert’s scrutiny of the studio intensified following the layoff of over a thousand employees. This situation was further complicated by a public relations crisis involving a seriously ill staff member, compelling the company to swiftly address public backlash. Dreunen expresses skepticism regarding Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney’s assertions that these layoffs are unrelated to artificial intelligence.
Dreunen notes that companies outside the U.S. are actively exploring generative AI and its potential applications, whereas Epic has yet to demonstrate significant progress in this domain.

He further highlights external pressures, including the rising cost of living and an imbalance in platform holders’ rights. These factors collectively diminish Epic’s profits and escalate its expenses due to ongoing legal fees.
Empires don’t fall overnight… They crumble from within, gradually, until one day the walls fall, and everyone is surprised. We are somewhere in the middle of this process now.
Dreunen concludes that while this assessment may be painful for Epic, the studio must adapt significantly to safeguard Fortnite’s future and maintain player engagement.
